Coming Up: Oxford United

7 June 2016

As the fixture release date draws nearer, we’ll be taking a look at the newly promoted and relegated sides will be joining us in League One next season.

Today, we take a look at 2015/16 Sky Bet League Two runners up Oxford United.

Nickname: The U’s
Founded: 1893
Stadium: Kassam Stadium
Manager: Michael Appleton
Last season: 2nd in League Two

Having spent the majority of the season in the automatic promotion positions, The U’s place in League One was confirmed on the final day of the campaign as they beat Wycombe Wanderers 3-0 at home.

Their 14 away league wins set a new club record for a single season.

Oxford produced shocks in all three cup competitions, beating higher-division opposition in the FA Cp, League Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which they reached the final of.

They couldn’t repeat their heroics at Wembley, however, as they lost 3-2 to Barnsley under the arch.

Midfielder Kemar Roofe finished the season as the club’s leading goalscorer with 26 goals in all competitions.

The last time Port Vale faced The U’s was during the 2012/13 season. Both sides claimed home wins with the Valiants claiming a 3-0 victory at Vale Park.

Oxford returned the favour in March 2013, though, as Alfie Potter and Deane Smalley each scored to earn them the three points.
