Pope expects Ben Williamson to be a bit hit

Striker Tom Pope was quick to praise fellow striker Ben Williamson following Saturday’s 2-1 win over Gillingham at Vale Park and says he expects the forward to become a big success with the club.

Pope said: “Willo terrorised them at the back, everything that was put over the top, he was there in a flash. He will be disappointed he didn’t get a goal, but anybody who knows football will know he put in a really good shift and certainly deserved a goal.

“You are confident that every time you go up for the ball and flicking it on he is going to be there or thereabouts.

“Sometimes when you are playing on your own you are jumping up and there is nobody behind you.

“Sometimes that doubt in your mind can make you lose the header because you are too busy thinking about where you are going to head it and before you know it somebody has come over the top and headed it away.

“In that respect you always know Willo is going to be behind you and he is so strong for his size, he’s probably the strongest player at the club by a mile.

“He isn’t just lightning quick, he’s so strong, but everyone can see he just needs that bit of composure in front of goal and that will come with experience.

“I know he is 25 or 26 now, but he is still relatively new to the game, but by the end of the year I think he’s going to be a real success at the club.”
