Gavin Tomlin was amongst the substitutes after returning from injury where he was joined by recent debutant Jordan Hugill as Vale faced a Shortwood United side looking for am FA Cup shock.
Doug Loft was ruled out though injury as Micky Adams made three changes to the starting line-up with Jennison Myrie-Williams coming in for the skipper, Lee Hugues up front in place of Ben Williamson and Chris Birhcall in for Louis Dodds.

Vale eased their way into the second round of the FA Cup an look forward to a home tie against Salisbury City after a 4-0 win at Shortwood United.

Jennison Myrie Williams and Chris Birchall gave Vale a two-goal lead and Myrie Williams added a second from the spot late on in th egame, before Chris Lines completed the scoring in stoppage time.

Although Vale were enjoying the early minutes of the game from a territorial and possession point of view, the home side stood up to things well and were far from outplayed.

The goal seemed to have the effect of settling the team down a little and Vale began to play the ball around a bit more, looking more comfortable as they pushed forward.

The visitors continued to have most of the ball but seemed to lack any finesse, with too many stray passes at crucial times.

Vale’s defensive wall showed it was up to the job when two Shortwood free kicks from just outside the area in the space of two minutes were blocked, with Chris Neal just a spectator.

The home side came out in the second half in an attacking frame of mind, pushing Vale deep into their own half, but Vale were not troubled too much.

Tim Haddock forced Chris Neal to save at the foot of the post with a long distance effort, but otherwise the Vale ‘keeper had little to do.
