There was an early casualty after Vale ‘keeper Chris Neal went down awkwardly after collecting a cross and was clearly not going to get up in a hurry.

After receiving treatment, he was unable to continue and was helped off the pitch before being replaced by Sam Johnson.

Vale had the ball in the County net three times in the opening twenty minutes, but efforts by Uche Ikpeazu, Michael O’Connor and Enoch Andoh were all ruled out.

In between those disallowed goals came a decent save from Johnson. Blair Adams was allowed to run at the Vale defence before firing in a decent shot from twenty yards, but Johnson dived to his right to keep it out.

Tempers threatened to flare up at one point in the game but the referee dealt with it and managed to keep players apart before it became too serious.

As half time approached Michael O’Connor went close with a free kick which was heading for the top corner, but was held by Scott Loach in the Notts goal.

The Sam Johnson managed to touch over a 25 yard shot from Jimmy Spencer, which on another day could have easily ended up in the net.

Vale ought to have taken the lead within a minute of the re-start, when O’Connor threaded the ball through the heart of the visitors’ defence to send Byron Moore clear.
