Match Report | Port Vale 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers

WYC

A battling performance sees Darren Moore's side draw 0-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

Despite an end-to-end game that saw both teams go close on numerous occasions, neither team could find the finishing touch, and both left Vale Park with a point.

Coming into today’s game, the gaffer made three changes to his side following the previous league game at Bolton. Ben Heneghan, Ruari Paton, and George Hall came into the eleven, replacing Jesse Debrah, George Byers, and Jaheim Headley.

Darren Moore’s side had the brighter start to the gam,e with Devante Cole having a shot from close range that was deflected behind for a corner. Unfortunately, the corner would come to nothing, but the Vale fans were right behind their side.

It was a fantastic opening ten minutes from the Vale, and they almost took the lead through Marvin Johnson; however, his right-footed effort went agonisingly wide of Will Norris’ left post.

Following a Vale attack, the visitors countered down the right through Fred Oneydinma, who laid the ball back to Cauley Woodrow. Woodrow met the ball with a first-time strike and forced Joe Gauci into a top save, with the keeper tipping the ball over the bar.

It was end-to-end stuff at Vale Park, and Ruari Paton had two chances in quick succession. Firstly, Devante Cole played the ball to Paton before the Irishman let fly, but his effort went just wide. Paton then connected with the ball after a ricochet, but his shot went into the side netting.

The next twenty minutes that followed in Burslem were quiet, but Wycombe did create two opportunities on the stroke of half-time. A free-kick was dinked over the wall to Cauley Woodrow, whose volleyed effort flew into the Bycars. Then, Fred Oyedinma struck the post from close range after he connected with a cross from the left-hand side.

Vale did have the ball in the net right before the referee blew his whistle for half-time. After a Vale attack, the ball was kept alive and Paton found himself through on goal and fired home brilliantly, only for there to be an offside in the build-up and the goal ruled out.

The visitors started the second half better and came close to taking the lead with fifty minutes played. A long ball over the Vale defence to Sam Bell was gathered by the winger before he cut inside and got a shot away that trickled past Joe Gauci’s post.

Fred Oyedinma was causing problems down the right, and he almost set up the first goal of the game. After beating his man, Onyedinma played the ball to Alex Lowry at the edge of the box. The striker got a shot away, but it was brilliantly blocked by the on-rushing Cameron Humphreys.

The Chairboys hit the woodwork for the second time in the game with an hour played. Following a flurry of Wycombe attacks, Sam Bell found himself free and let fly with a powerful drive on his left foot, and with Gauci seemingly beaten, the ball cannoned back off the post.

Rhys Walters forced Will Norris into a fine save just moments later. The midfielder hit a sweet volley that seemed to be destined for the far corner, but Norris did well and tipped the ball behind for a corner.

Vale were continuing to create chances, and with twenty minutes to play, Devante Cole had a great opportunity. Ruari Paton did well to beat his man and play a ball over the top to Cole. The forward sat his defender down, but the resulting effort could only find the goalkeeper's hands.

Following five minutes of stoppage time, the referee brought the game to a close, meaning the points were shared in Burslem.
