Martin Foyle’s side supply the opposition as Vale take on Southport in their penultimate pre-season friendly before the start of the 2014-15 season. The former Vale favourite took over as manager at Haig Avenue in early May, after the resignation of former boss John Coleman.

Coleman was appointed as manager of Southport in December 2013 and was soon joined by Jimmy Bell, who left the Vale to join up with the former Accrington Stanley boss once again as his assistant, but the pair of them left the club two days after the end of the season, leaving the way clear for Foyle to take up the post.

Southport were formed in 1881 and joined the Football League in 1921 as a founder member of the Third Division North and having finished in the bottom half of the table in the 1957/58 season they dropped into the newly formed Division Four.

After finished second bottom on three consecutive occasions, they were voted out of the Football League in 1978 and their place was taken by Wigan Athletic.

Known as ‘The Sandgrounders’, they currently play in the Conference Premier League and play their home games at theMerseyrail Community Stadium.
