Grew full of praise for striker
Vale Assistant Manager Mark Grew has praised Ben Williamson and says if the striker can add goals to his game, as he does in training, he can be a huge asset to the club.He came off the bench for the second half against Coventry City on Saturday and caused the visitors’ defence all sorts of problems with his pace.
Grew said: “We needed to get three points on the board. However we got it on Saturday, we needed three points.
“We felt in the first half, Doddsy put a really good shift in, but we felt we had got no pace going against their two central defenders.
“We felt that in the second half Ben had got to come on and as soon as he made that first run they started to go deeper and deeper and that allowed us to play a lot more football.
“We have since looked at the stats and we only had two chances in the first half, and that was counting the one from Liam Chilvers when he booted it over.
“We counted fifteen chances in the second half, so those stats tell you that Ben Williamson has caused the problems.
“After the game their manager said that Ben forced them onto the back foot. Ben just needs goals to get his confidence as high as he can. When he does start scoring, what a good player he is going to be.
“I had a good chat with him on the pitch after the game on Saturday and I said to him, ‘You have got to start believing in your own ability.’
“I don’t think he realises what he has got. In training he is probably one of the best finishers and he has got to take that over the white line on a Saturday.
“He is always wanting to learn and once he starts scoring I think he is going to be a massive asset for us."
