Striker targeting goals
Striker Ben Williamson is hungry for goals and minutes as the Vale frontman looks ahead to tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Kidderminster Harriers.
With competition for places upfront competitive, Williamson will be looking to make further impressions against Kidderminster and stake a claim for a starting spot come August 3.
“It’ll be a tough game I’m sure, we are just all trying to get 90 minutes under our belts and then move on and hopefully everyone will be fit for the beginning of the season,” Williamson told Valiant Player.
“The strikers job in the team is to score the goals and that’s my main objective, during pre-season you just want to get your chance and score goals and come the first game of the season on August 3 you’re ready.”
At 24-years-old Williamson represents the youngest of the four strikers that Micky Adams has at his disposal and the forward believes that can work in his favour as he looks to learn from Lee Hughes, Tom Pope and Gavin Tomlin.
“Experience is key and Hughesy has been around a while now and has been at a lot of clubs and scored a lot of goals so it’s nice to have him around.
He added: “I’m still learning off him, seeing what he does everyday.
“As a striker if you get goals, confidence builds up, if you get a chance you have to score.”
Micky Adams has now strengthened the Vale squad with five players, Chris Robertson, Chris Lines, Kaid Mohamed, Gavin Tomlin and recently Anthony Griffith. Williamson believes Ireland was a great chance for the new boys to get to know their teammates on and off the pitch.
“We had a great session in Ireland, it was everyone together and everyone integrated well,” he said.
“I got to know the new boys and we had a little bonding session on the Saturday when everyone was together.”
