A strong Vale line-up faced a young Latics' Reserves side, with ‘keeper Cisak being the oldest in the Oldham side at 23, in this early afternoon kick-off. The early exchanges showed this as Vale dominated the opening 15 minutes without getting their noses in front.
A Shuker corner was headed wide by Lloyd and then a Birchall burst down the right sending in a cross that Williamson collected and controlled before being closed down in the act of shooting.
Morsy then put in Birchall but his cross shot was wide of the far post and this was followed by Lloyd bursting past a defender to unleash a powerful shot that the ‘keeper could only parry.

A cross from the right seemed to have evaded everyone as it went across goal, but Sutherland saved the ball going out for a goal kick and then pulled it back for Taylor to tap in from 6 yards.
The game was still even as Doug Price saw a 20 yard drive fly wide before Johnson saved at the second attempt from a Sutherland shot.
Vale came closest to getting back on level terms before the break when Price attempted to beat Cisak after he had come off his line but the 30 yard dipping effort dropped just too late.
Vale created an opportunity from the second half kick off as a long ball saw Andrew only just beaten to the ball by Cisak.
Vale pressed for an equaliser and a neat interplay between Yates and Morsy put in Yates, but he was tackled in the act of shooting and a corner resulted.
From the corner Andrew rose highest but could not get any direction on his header and it was eventually cleared.
On 64 minutes Tom Morris was unlucky as a surging run saw him unleash a 30 yard effort that crashed against the bar and Yates, following up, saw his shot pushed away for a corner.
