Vale almost increased their lead after 8 minutes as Haughton slipped the ball through for Steele but his touch was just too heavy and it ran to the ‘keeper.FaulknerWith a trip to meet Manchester United in the next round as the prize there was no additional motivation needed, even if it will be played at Altrincham rather than Old Trafford. Vale were out of the traps quickly after Steele was fouled just inside the Bury half a short free kick was taken and the ball was swung over by Reeves and collected by Turner who pushed it across the line for

minute as Faulkner failed to deal with a ball over the top and it allowed Miller to advance on Pickering’s goal and place the ball into the corner of the net. The next 15 minutes saw lots of neat football from both teams but no chances resulted until a quality through ball by Wakeham almost got Haughton in but the pass was just too heavy. As the half hour approached a terrific ball by Haughton allowed Turner a chance at the left hand post but his effort was smothered by the ‘keeper and cleared away. 2 minutes later a shot from the corner of the area flashed the wrong side of the far post with the ‘keeper well beaten.thBury were level in the 10

With a minute of the half remaining the visitors took the lead for the first time as Burgess hit the ball home in a very congested penalty area. Vale went close in the second minute of the second period as a cross was met by Turner whose header beat Ruddy but hit the corner of the bar and post and dropped down to be safely collected by him. After 52 minutes Bury threatened the Vale goal but Clarke got in a saving tackle. Steele entered the Referee’s book after dragging a player back with 10 minutes of the half on the clock. On the hour mark Kapend crossed for Haughton to shoot and it was heading in until Potter hooked it way at the last moment. Ede came on as a replacement for Wakeham and almost immediately scored as a Kapend pass put him in on goal but the ‘keeper just got his body in the way of his flicked shot and the ball was cleared away.

blasted home at the far post after cutting in from the right. KapendWith 18 minutes left Kapend was fouled 25 yards put and Bourne was shown the yellow card; from the free kick Bergin blasted the ball into the defensive wall. Pickering was soon coming to Vale’s rescue as he was at full stretch to get a firm hand to a drive by Dudley at the expense of a corner. Pickering kept Vale in the game with 7 minutes remaining as he pulled off an excellent double save but Vale responded with a low drive by Haughton being well held by Ruddy at the other end of the pitch. Pickering was again in action as full-time approached when plucking a shot out of the air just under the cross bar. Vale pushed for the equaliser in added time and a Bergin header was just wide but as time looked to have run out

As both teams began to tire the visitors were able to slow the pace of the game down and this time successfully see out the game.  Bury took the lead in the first minute of extra time as a free kick was flicked on in the box, Faulkner failed to control and Miller touched the ball home. Vale rarely looked like equalising again for the rest of the half and were indebted to Pickering for another good save near the end. The second period was 4 minutes old when a deflected cross reached the back post where Ruddy saved at Mottram’s feet. Pickering was continuing to star as he saved from Miller in a one on one, although Miller had looked offside when put clear.
