Neil Aspin: "The team showed what they can do."

Neil Aspin insists that Tuesday's commanding victory away at Yeovil Town has provided everyone with a 'welcome boost' as the players head into a weekend without a fixture.

An impressive performance from Vale at Huish Park was rewarded with three goals and all of the points, and the manager is eager to see his side put in more performances of the same standard on a regular basis.

The previous fixture came in the form of a 1-0 defeat at home to Swindon Town, and having watched contrasting displays in the past week, Aspin wants to ensure the players can build on the Yeovil result.

He said: "I'm certainly feeling a lot better than I was on Saturday night, there's no doubt about that. The difference in feelings is great, but the contrast in the performance was great as well.

"You leave the Swindon game as a manager feeling very disappointed, but then you get the reverse on Tuesday where the team played well and showed what they can do - that makes you feel a lot more positive.

"It's much better for everyone this week and the result at Yeovil has come as a welcome boost."

One player who shone in the game was Cristian Montano, and the Colombian thrived out wide as he scored two goals to help the Valiants cruise to a relatively straightforward win.

Having suffered with injury problems since he signed for the club prior to the 2017/18 season, the 26-year-old has found life at Vale Park frustrating at times, but Aspin has full confidence in Montano's ability.

"When I came to the club Cristian was in and out of the team and he has been since I took over, but then we played him at left-back and I thought he was fantastic," he said.

"We then gave him a new contract and he was in a position this summer where I thought he would go from strength to strength, but it would be fair to say that due to a variety of reasons, that hasn't happened.

"After I took him off on Saturday I was faced with a decision because It would've been easy not to play him on Tuesday, but I have a lot of faith in Cristian.

"I see the things that he can do and I know what he can bring to the team, and at Yeovil he justified his selection and he gave a performance that he is capable of.

"For me he has now set out a marker and he has to respond to that by really kicking on from it."

Despite their still being over a month until the transfer window opens, Aspin admits that he is always thinking of ways he can improve the squad of players that he has at his disposal.

Having recruited 15 new faces in the summer, the Vale boss has reshaped the playing staff at the club as he looks for a more successful campaign, but he revealed their could be more movement in January.

He said: "When you go into a job as manager you look at the squad, the length of contracts and what the budget is, so there are many things to take into consideration.

"That's why it takes a period of time, but once a manager has had that, it's at that point that you can really judge somebody.

"It will take a while to get what we want, but if we do have funds that means we could buy a player, we have to make sure it's the right one.

"There are also loan players that I'd like to add to the squad and I have a few targets, but it's always down to what clubs want them and whether or not any of them are from a higher league.

"It's very difficult to sign players on permanent deals in January, and invariably you have to wait until the summer when they're out of contract to have a fighting chance of getting them."
