Vale boss Micky Adams was quick to play down the result following Saturday’s 6-0 win over Newcastle Town at the Aspire Stadium, and stressed the important thing was to assess the fitness of his players.
He said: “The game was played in good spirit and we have a 6-0 win. It is the first game on a long road.
“These games are slightly false, I am sure we won’t be afforded the amount of possession we had today in League One.
“It’s just interesting to see what stage the players are at in terms of their condition and the work we have done with them.
“They are in good shape and we are pleased with them. We have hit the ground running in terms of our fitness work and I think that has shown today,
“I always say to the players you are self-employed at this time of year, you have to look after yourself and get yourself in the best condition that you possibly can be.
“Because when you kick off in August there is no one else going to do your running for you.
“So, make sure you give yourself the best opportunity to be in the side and perform at the best level you can.”
Asked whether he intended to sign any of the four trialists on show, Adams didn’t give too much away, but hinted deals may be done, depending on finances.
