Match Report | Port Vale 4-2 Scunthorpe United

The Valiants booked their place in the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup despite a late scare against National League Scunthorpe United.

Another strong start out the blocks at Vale Park saw Onel Hernandez charge through on goal from a Keyrol Figueroa pass, but the Cuban’s shot bobbled just wide of the post.

An opening goal arrived shortly after that chance, with Jaheim Headley working well to find space to cross down the left before drilling a ball across the box, with Liverpool loanee Figueroa sliding the ball past Jones for his fourth in five games.

The visitors struggled to deal with the pace of the Vale frontline, with chances continuing to come after the first.

Jordan Gabriel delivered the next cross to Figueroa just short of the quarter-hour mark, but a strong save from the Scunthorpe goalkeeper twice, after Jaheim Headley arrived on the scene, maintained a one-goal difference between the two sides.

Two minutes later, George Hall ran through on goal but his shot failed to trouble, marking a missed set of opportunities to double the lead.

Scunthorpe settled into the game, and the chances were more sparse for the rest of the half for the Valiants. It was Luke Brennan for the visitors who missed a golden chance to equalise right before half time which provided a let off.

Into the second half, The Irons were beginning to consistently trouble the Vale defence, creating a series of dangerous opportunities of the counter attack, but eventually opportunities they would rue.

Vale continued to look dangerous going forward, and Figueroa found his strike partner Hernandez who had a man to beat to be one-on-one with the keeper. After twisting and turning, he lifted the ball with pace past the keeper just before the hour mark to provide a two-goal cushion.

Any pressure the Valiants were under was alleviated from the second goal, and a third arrived quickly after.

Jaheim Headley threaded a fine ball through to substitute Max Watters who passed home with ease for a Vale third, Headley getting his second assist of the game in a fine performance.

Scunthorpe began a late fight back with five minutes to go, as a well placed cross reached striker James Norwood who powered a header past Marko Marosi.

That continued when a low cross reached substitute Declan Howe who tapped home at the back post.

A counter attack with one minute left saw Oli Lynch through on goal, the striker composing himself to drive past Jones to ease the nerves and send Vale through to the Second Round.
