The Valiants see off Championship side Bristol City in the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup thanks to an extra-time goal from Ben Waine
It was a game that Vale had the far better chances in, but just couldn’t find the goal in normal time. However, come extra time, Vale continued to push and eventually got their goal thanks to a great goal from Ben Waine.
Jon Brady made four changes to his side that got a point against Luton on Saturday, with Ethon Archer, Martin Sherif, Jordan Shipley and Tyler Magloire replacing Jayden Stockley, George Hall, Funso Ojo and Kyle John.
The visitors got the game underway in Burslem, but the first chance of the game fell the way of the Valiants with ten minutes played. Ethon Archer whipped a right footed cross into the box that was met by the head of Ben Waine, however, Waine’s effort went just wide of the mark.
With half an hour on the clock, it was Vale once again who came close to opening the scoring. A long ball over the Robbins defence from Tyler Magloire was latched onto by Ben Waine, but the New Zealand man’s resulting shot was well saved by Joe Lumley in the Bristol net.
Another chance fell Vale’s way just before the referee blew his whistle for half-time. A corner into the box was initially cleared by a City defender, but Jordan Gabriel nodded it back towards goal to Ben Waine, before the striker narrowly missed the target with a header of his own.
Following a second half of very few half chances, the referee brought proceedings to a close and with the sides level, that meant we were heading to extra time at Vale Park.
Ben Waine was at the centre of everything Vale created and came within inches of scoring. A defensive mix-up from the Robbins allowed Waine to get a toe to the ball and knock it past the keeper. However, a recovering City defender managed to clear the ball with it seeming destined to roll over the line.
Three minutes into the second half of extra time, the visitors had their first shot on target of the game. Tomi Hovart struck a free kick over the wall, but Joe Gauci claimed it easily.
Moments later, Jon Brady’s side got their deserved goal and sent Vale Park wild! A through ball from Grey was perfectly played to Ben Waine, who rounded the keeper and got his shot away that evaded the retreating defenders and rolled into the bottom corner.
With the clock approaching the 120th minute, Bristol City missed a gilt-edge opportunity to send the game to penalties. A cross into the Vale box was flicked on to the back post where Mark Sykes was waiting with what seemed like a tap-in, but the City man fluffed his lines and bundled an attempt wide.
Following over 120 minutes, the referee brought the contest to a close, with Vale coming out deserved winners, meaning they’ll play Premier League side Sunderland in the next round on Sunday!
