Club confirms football department changes

Club Update

Following our recent operational and infrastructure update, we are pleased to provide the following football department update to supporters.

We can now confirm a series of changes designed to strengthen decision-making and support long-term progress both on and off the pitch, following a review of the club’s football and operational structures.

The review process has taken place over a sustained period and has included input from across the club, as well as consideration of feedback and views expressed by supporters and other stakeholders.

As part of these changes, the club will appoint a Chief Scout within the recruitment department, overseen by Senior Head of Recruitment, Lee Darnborough. The Chief Scout will play a key role in identifying and evaluating talent as part of a strengthened recruitment process.

This development also coincides with the establishment of a new Football Leadership Team, bringing together key areas of the football operation, with support from other key staff, including Head of Academy Danny Lloyd and Head of Football Administration Jess Frost.

The formation of this group is designed to ensure stronger alignment and a more cohesive approach across all areas of the football side of the club, while the ongoing development of the club’s football philosophy will target clear identity and long-term success.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, we are also actively pursuing additional advisory and ambassadorial support within the football department, with a view to providing trusted perspective and support to the club, and supporting players in understanding the identity and values of Port Vale.

Finally, we can also confirm that Matt Oakley (Head of Strategy & Performance) and Tom Fry (First Team Technical Scout) have left their roles, and both depart with the best wishes of everyone at the club.

Chief Executive, Matt Hancock said: “We’ve taken the time to review how we operate as a football club as we look to progress, and that process has included honest reflection on what hasn’t worked well enough, as well as listening carefully to the views of supporters and other stakeholders. I want to thank them again for their incredible backing throughout last season.

“We understand the importance of demonstrating that we are learning and improving, and these changes are designed to bring greater accountability and football experience into our decision-making. I think it’s absolutely vital that we have a clear long-term identity which is defined by the club, and we’ll also have more support going forward from experienced advisors who know and understand Port Vale.

“The appointment of a Chief Scout, alongside the roles that the wider Football Leadership Team will play, strengthens our football structure and ensures we’re better aligned across all areas of the club.

“Together with Danny's appointment as Head of Academy recently, we believe we’re in a position of strength to move the club forward as a group from a footballing perspective, and ensure we’re better equipped for the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
