Leutwiler came through the ranks of Swiss Super League side, FC Basel, featuring for their Under-18 and Under-21 sides before a move to England in 2012 to join Middlesborough.

However, it was his time at Shrewsbury Town where he made a name for himself in English football, featuring in every game for the Shropshire outfit in their promotion from League Two whilst also breaking the club record for the number of clean sheets in a single league season (23).
