Port Vale’s Under 18s reached the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup for the first time in ten years with victory against Hull City on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Jack Shorrock, Che Trapasso and Rhys Walters sealed the victory for Scott Ruscoe and Matty Done’s side, who defeated Chesterfield and Salford City in the previous two rounds to set up a tie against the Tigers at Vale Park.

The Vale had to work hard for progress from the off and were given an early warning when Hull striker Glen Sani got in on the right of the area only to be denied by Vale keeper Dominic Brook, who made himself big to deny the striker at the near post.

Ben Lomax and Trapasso both went close inside an open first ten minutes before Brook was again called upon to excellent tip a Keegan Green effort from the edge of the area behind for a corner.

James Plant then went close on a couple of occasions at the first half progressed, with the Vale captain a constant threat for Ruscoe and Done’s side throughout.

Five minutes before the interval, the Vale got themselves in front as Shorrock – who became the club’s youngest-ever first team player earlier this season – showed excellent technique to fire home on the half volley from the edge of the area.

The Vale managed the early stages of the second half well, though they had to work hard throughout to protect their clean sheet and limit opportunities for the visitors.

11 minutes from time the Vale doubled their advantage as a wonderful delivery from the left from Shorrock picked out Trapasso, who headed home powerfully beyond George Wilson in the Hull City goal.

On 87 minutes, Walters made sure of progress with a wonderful strike, curling home a wonderful effort from the edge of the area after Lomax’s initial effort was blocked following another superb Shorrock delivery.

Port Vale: Brook, Lomax, Besford, Walters, Chale, Norburn, Trapasso (Brasier 82), McDermott, Fisher (Pevide 79), Plant (Buah 88), Shorrock.

Subs: Perry, Ryan, Manhertz, Dipepa.
