Match Report | Carlisle United V Port Vale

The Valiants extend their unbeaten run to four games with a win in Cumbria thanks to goals from David Worrall, James Wilson and David Amoo.

The Valiants were looking to continue their unbeaten run in Cumbria and the Valiants could not have asked for a better start. James Wilson was alert to a mistake from Carlisle’s defence and played the ball through to David Worrall who drilled the ball into the far corner inside a minute.

James Wilson began the game in a deeper number ten role but still looked dangerous in front of goal. On 15 minutes his half-volley from inside the area was well dealt with by keeper Mark Howard.

Carlisle had created very little in the opening stages but only needed one chance to level the game. After 21 minutes a ball in from the left missed everybody in the area but Owen Windsor followed in and tapped home the equaliser.

Vale responded well and seven minutes later almost got the lead back. Ben Garrity’s looping effort from 25-yards went just over the bar and did not challenge Howard.

Wilson came again on 36 minutes as he ran at goal but his shot from inside the area was saved. From the resulting throw-in Wilson this time tried his look from 20-yards with a curling effort from the right but Howard kept the shot out.

Five minutes later Windsor had another strike at goal from 20-yards out but this one did not threaten Thomas Holy. But two minutes before the break, the Valiants got their rewards for what their first-half performance deserved. James Wilson received Chris Hussey’s ball in the middle of the box and had his first shot blocked before he smashed in the rebound to put Vale back in front.

After the hour mark Kian Harratt had a great chance to give the Valiants some breathing room. Garrity’s pass found Worrall at the back post who headed across to an unmarked Harratt whose shot was saved from close range but the rebound was from too tight an angle to score.

But in the final ten minutes we got our third after great pressing from substitute David Amoo. He forced an error from the home defence and he was in one on one against Howard. Amoo’s shot was too strong for Howard as a hand from the Carlisle stopper could not keep the effort out.

The Valiants almost had another minutes later as Hussey’s cross met the head of James Wilson but his headed effort glanced just wide of the post. But the three goals were enough as we took all three points.
