Port Vale

Form: WWDLLWLWWD

Port Vale will look to build on their current form this afternoon off the back of a third straight clean sheet on Tuesday evening. Neil Aspin’s side showed once again how defensively capable they really are with another resolute and dedicated defensive display. Their performance earned them a 0-0 draw at The Lamex Stadium and puts them three games unbeaten in all competitions.

Theo Vassell showed his worth once again and looks to have nailed down in Aspin’s starting 11 with yet another impressive display on Tuesday night. The defender came into the side when Vale hosted Burton Albion in the Checkatrade Trophy and hasn’t looked back since with a number of stately performances against the likes of Oldham Athletic and Stevenage.

Ricky Miller also impressed and will be hoping to be given a starting berth this afternoon having started on the bench against Stevenage. The forward came on at half-time in mid-week and made an instant impact looking Vale’s biggest threat in front of goal. However, the tie comes too soon for Cristian Montano and Manny Oyeleke as the pair are both yet to recover from their respective injuries.

Bury

Form: WWLWDDDWWD

League Position: 8th

Top Scorer: Nicky Maynard (5 goals)

The Shakers boast an impressive record of late having not lost in seven games in all competitions – they’ll be looking to make it eight at Vale Park this afternoon. Last time out, Ryan Lowe’s side drew 1-1 with Welsh outfit, Newport County. Nicky Maynard gave Bury the lead with 24 minutes played, but his opener was cancelled out in the second-half by Jamille Matt, who scored with just over half an hour to go.

Chris Dagnall could be in with a chance of starting this afternoon having made a substitute appearance against Newport, though Lowe would be forced to break up Maynard’s impressive partnership with Dom Telford in order to squeeze the forward in.

Eoghan O’Connell is expected to be side-lined once again as he is yet to recover from a hamstring injury.

One to watch: Dominic Telford

21-year-old forward who wears the number 18 for The Shakers. Telford began his playing career with Blackpool where he joined as a first-year scholar with the youth team in June 2013. He made his first-team debut for The Seasiders on the 9th August 2014 as an 88th minute substitute against Nottingham Forest. Telford scored on his second appearance for Blackpool in a 1-1 draw with Rotherham United.

As a teenager, the forward joined Stoke City before a brief loan spell with Bristol Rovers. Failing to make an appearance for The Potters, Telford left for Bury in 2018. The striker has contributed three goals and two assists so far this season.

Talk

Neil Aspin: “They are another one of the teams that are going to do well this season, so we’ve been unfortunate that we’ve had them one after another, but we have to ensure we are better than we were in the last home game. We can’t concede early and give ourselves a difficult job. We need to be competitive and put them under pressure to try and score goals, we need to be positive."

Ryan Lowe: "I went and watched them in the Checkatrade against Burton and they've got some good players, so we won't take anything for granted. We'll go to Port Vale and show them respect as we do with every team. Again, it's two football clubs locking horns, two sets of players trying to get points and two managers trying to get points. We'll do our homework, but we'll just worry about us".
