The Valiants welcomed Burntwood Phoenix after a string of games being played away in which the girls narrowly lost.

Vale started off brightly with a few shots fired just wide of the Burntwood goal. However, Burntwood did pose a threat early on, but goalkeeper Lockett was quick off her line to sweep up.

Vale scored within five minutes as the ball played was out wide to Smith who was just inside the box and fired a shot passed the Burntwood goalkeeper.

This rallied the girls who then quickly scored a second goal through Wright who won the ball on the edge of the box and slotted the ball bottom right of the 'keeper.

The third goal quickly came soon after from a long ball over the top of Burntwood defence from Lockett, with Myatt chasing after the pass and took her chance superbly well as she fired the ball calmly passed the on-rushing 'keeper.

Vale wasted no time from the kick-off to win the ball back and worked the ball upfield. Minutes later, Beamon got on the scoresheet with a great strike on the edge of the box. This was followed by a quickfire second from Beamon, who lost her marker and slotted the ball low into the corner.

Vale thought they had won a penalty after Finney superbly worked her way into the box and was allegedly tripped, but the referee waved the appeal away. Minute later, Burntwood won a penalty for themselves after 'keeper Lockett brought down the opposition striker. Burntwood scored from the spot, and Vale were then on the back foot for the final 5 minutes for the first half. 

HALF-TIME: Port Vale 5-1 Burntwood Phoenix 

Manager Josh Podmore made a few changes at halftime which paid off as Wright was pushed out to play on the right and was played in to claim her second of the game, as she calmly slotted the ball passed the 'keeper.

The seventh goal was scored by substitute Richings who scored her first goal of the season after being played through by her strike partner Finney. Richings shrugged off the defender and had the composure to side foot her shot past the 'keeper.

Vale kept pressing for more goals as well as being solid in defence with the opposition struggling to break down the defensive line.

Wright managed to get her hat-trick with a superb run down the right hand side. She cut inside her marker on the edge of the box and fired a thunderous strike into the far corner.

Vale fought bravely and were determined not to concede anymore with players putting in last ditch blocks and challenges with all the girls working hard for each other.

Manager Josh Podmore said after the game: “The girls showed amazing character and belief to come off the back of an away defeat.

"We took a strong lead in the first half and conceded through a very clinical penalty.

"Half time we set team objectives, these were to add more goals but also to stay strong defensively and not concede, it was pleasing that the girls met those objectives.

"We now have a week off but are back at home on the 28th October against strong opposition in Stafford Town FC”.
