John Askey was in high spirits today as he looked ahead to Port Vale's league clash with Swindon Town. Having enjoyed two wins in his last two games, the Vale boss has insisted the club has been lifted by their upturn in form.

Appointed in October, Askey was made to wait for his first win, but it came in emphatic style as Vale beat promotion-chasing Mansfield Town at Vale Park last Saturday. A Ricky Miller brace ensured all three points remained in Burslem that day.

Bursting with confidence, Askey's vale really turned on the style to defeat Yeovil Town at Vale Park, courtesy of goals from Manny Oyeleke, Tom Conlon and Cristian Montano. 

Having tasted victory for the first time as Vale manager, Askey admits the atmosphere has improved around the club.

He said: "There's a big difference. I said when I first came in, there's a good atmosphere between the players; we've got a good set of players.

"But obviously, those two wins have given the club a massive lift. Although it's only two wins, it makes the job of staying up a lot easier.

"With the results, it's made a big difference and long may it continue."

In search of their third win in three, Vale make the trip south to face Swindon Town in Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday afternoon.

Having been beaten by the Robins earlier this season, the Valiants will be out to avenge the defeat they suffered earlier this season and the Vale boss is confident of going there and getting a result.

Speaking on the importance of the game, Askey believes a win at Swindon will take them that one step closer to Football League safety.

He said: "From the club's point of view a win would be massive. Another step closer to securing league football.

"But it would keep the confidence of the players going. I just hope they can keep doing what they're doing - it's all based around hard work and closing down the opposition and that's what we've got to continue to do.

"We can't afford to ease up."
