Gaffer says Vale need to learn from mistakes

Vale boss not happy with goal conceded against Tiverton Town

After Vale had given away a sloppy goal at Tiverton earlier today, Micky Adams is determined to make his side learn their lessons in readiness for when it really counts.

Vale lost their one hundred per cent pre-season record at Ladysmead, but salvaged something when striker Ben Williamson headed home his third goal in as many matches late in the game.

Adams said: “Pre-season is all about learning and I think the goal we conceded was a mistake and I would like to think that in the course of a season that wouldn’t be repeated, because I would like to see that stuck into the stand.

“But what pre-season does, when it becomes a little bit easy you get into bad habits and you have got to get out of bad habits and that’s the first thing.

“Secondly, we have missed a hat full of chances like you wouldn’t believe and I think the ‘keeper has ha d a good day for them.

“He has had a bit of luck as well, but it could easily have been a handful of goals – we haven’t got them and we have drawn one-all.

“I thought Tiverton were excellent. I thought they worked as hard as they possibly could, they are a young and enthusiastic side and it was just the test that we needed.”

Vale have trained hard since returning from their summer break, but were put through their paces on Friday by Navy PTIs and it is fair to say one or two of the Vale players were feeling the strain.

After the match one player said it was the hardest session he had ever taken part in, and considering he has experienced a Micky Adams pre-season on more than one occasion, that is saying something.

The Vale boss acknowledged how hard it had been, but was not ready to use that as a reason for not winning their seventh pre-season game in a row.

He said: “We have had a busy week and I am not making excuses, I wouldn’t do that, but we have had a busy, busy week. We had a physical day yesterday and maybe it was one game too many.

“Having said that, we have got through it, we’ve not picked up any injuries, so we are pleased with the work that we have done today.”
