Askey looking for improvement when Vale host Fleetwood Town

14 July 2019

Port Vale manager John Askey says his side must do better than what they showed against Leek Town when they host Fleetwood on Wednesday evening.

The Valiants made it three wins in three for pre-season with a 2-1 win against Leek Town yesterday afternoon but despite the result, the gaffer was less than impressed with the performance as whole.

Vale are yet to face a league side so far this pre-season, having already played the likes of Leek, Kidsgrove and Nottingham Forest under 23s, Askey feels that Wednesday's fixture will give him a better idea of what his squad is capable of.

Look ahead to Fleetwood, the gaffer is looking to his side to show more aggression than what they showed yesterday afternoon and to step it up a gear against the Joey Barton's league one club.

"It will be completely different. We will have to defend a lot better than we did (against Leek). We hardly won a header and that is through lack of aggression.

"I think some of them just wanted to get through the game without getting hurt. But Fleetwood will be a little bit different and a higher tempo, especially on our pitch.

"There were things from the game that I wasn't happy with but overall the fitness was okay. I just think at times we need to be a little bit more aggressive, one or two."

As he looks for more intensity and aggression against the upcoming opponents at Vale Park, one area that has caught the gaffers eye is his attacking options.

Strikers Tom Pope, Mark Cullen, Richie Bennett and new signing David Amoo have all managed to get on the scoresheet in the past three friendlies. David Amoo has already excited the fans with his pace and strength down the right-hand side.

With different options to choose from up front now, the gaffer feels his options up top have improved but is still keeping an eye out in the transfer window to see if he can add more firepower.

"I think we are better off than we were last season. You can see Cullen's movement is good, and Richie has goals in this league so I think we are stronger.

"I still think we need to work still on our movement to create more chances, but it is difficult to tell in these games.

"We haven't got to rush into anything, we still have a bit of time although it would be nice to get lads in and make sure they are 100 per cent fit.

"But as you saw, David Amoo has only just come with us and he looked okay. So, if, we can get better than we have got, we will try to do so."
