Juvenile boys offer helping hand with makeover of Academy building

16 April 2019

During the past two years the Vale Academy has implemented a number of initiatives in partnership with HMYOI Prison for Juvenile Boys in Werrington, with the objective of providing educational and aspirational activities for various groups of the boys aged 15-18.

Thanks to the continuation of this partnership, we now have a much smarter Academy building following a painting and decorating project completed by a group of boys who are due to be released from the Prison in the near future. These boys have shown a real willingness to engage positively in the community and when released they intend to study at college and/or to train for a future career.

This practical project builds on the visit to the prison by Cristian Montano, Tom Pope and Scott Brown in February when the players met with groups of boys to explain the importance of hard work and a positive attitude in a career. Their presentations explained how it’s never too late to change and  the importance of making a plan in order to change your lifestyle.

During their recent visit to the club to take part in the painting project the boys received an update from Scott Brown on training, performance and the lifestyle of a footballer. They also attended a workshop with 25 players from the academy during which they discussed life at Werrington and their plans for the future.

The Academy’s Head of Education and Welfare Chris Taylor commented: “It’s pleasing to see the commitment shown by the young men from Werrington.  They have completed the tasks set by their supervisor to a really high standard and everyone is very happy with the work that has been done”.

“In addition, the boys were delighted to be able to spend time at a sporting venue and to discuss their plans for the future and how they should take advantage of the opportunities presented to them on release in order to turn their lives around.”

The Club is committed to its partnership with Werrington and will continue to provide initiatives which demonstrate that it’s never too late to change and with the right attitude and vision it is possible to succeed even when the going gets tough.
