Port Vale forward Gavin Massey says the Vale’s work ethic earned them all three points against Morecambe on Boxing Day.

Massey’s first half goal was the difference at Vale Park and the forward spoke about the importance of getting back to winning ways as Darrell Clarke’s side climbed to 9th in League One.

“I remember speaking in a previous interview and saying the Christmas period is always the hardest period because you have to grind out results,” Massey explained.

“We haven’t played at home for a little while and had two defeats off the back of that so it was about getting back into the rhythm again. It was good to get the win and now we move on to Sheffield Wednesday.

“They’re scrapping at the bottom of the table, they want points and it was that type of game. The pitch doesn’t help but the boys know that and when we come to play at home, we know we have to graft and if we don’t concede we have a good chance of winning football matches.

“We all want to achieve something great and we have all got to put the work in and graft; you can see that today, everyone was putting in 110% and the fans will appreciate that.”

Massey’s strike was his second league goal for the Vale and the 48th goal of his 441-game career to date and the forward spoke about how he always looks to bring more to the team than goals when featuring in a variety of roles.

“My biggest criticism over the years has been that when I get opportunities, I opt to pass, but today I had a crack and it went in – it was a good goal,” Massey explained.

“I know my quality and what I can bring to the team; goals are important but I bring a lot more to the team and I spoke to the gaffer this week about it because I know that if I am playing up front, the numbers are important because you are judged on your stats.”
