Luke Joyce hoping to close gap on play-offs with win at Stevenage

The Vale head into tomorrow's fixture just six points off the play-off places and Joyce is hoping to return to winning ways and continue applying pressure on the teams above them.

The Valiants have been threatening the top seven for the majority of the season thus far, and the Vale midfielder sees tomorrow’s fixture as a good opportunity for another three points.

It’s now five games unbeaten for John Askey’s side in the league, and Joyce is looking to continue the form that saw them complete a hectic festive period without defeat.

It’s been a successful first-half of the season for the Vale especially in comparison to last campaign, and the 32-year-old is continuing to relish his time at the club and has been pleased with his performances.

“If we can keep doing well, pick our league form up which has been pretty decent, we’ve not been getting beat but we’ve not won as many games as we would have liked to and think we’ve probably deserved to but that’s football.

“It’s another good opportunity tomorrow to hopefully get three points, get back on the board and hopefully closing that gap on the play-offs.

“I’m happy with how I’m playing, I feel like we’re playing good football as a team and I’m thoroughly enjoying it, I’m enjoying working under the gaffer and the staff and being at Port Vale."

Stevenage re-appointed Graham Westley as manager last month, and Joyce admits the Boro will prove a stern test under his reign.

Tomorrow’s opponents currently sit just above the foot of the table on goal difference, yet Vale’s number 4 emphasises that the expectation to pick up three points will make it all the more difficult to do so.

Askey’s side have enjoyed vast success against teams above them beating the likes of Swindon, Bradford and Crewe, yet have experienced contrasting results against teams who sit below them and Joyce stresses that the Vale must be at it from the start if they are to pick up something tomorrow afternoon.

"They’re tough games because teams are fighting for their lives and tomorrow will be just like that, I’ve never played at Stevenage and come off thinking well that was easy because that was never the case.

“I think if anything you have to be more on your guard if that makes sense, games like that make you worry a little bit because everyone is expecting you to go and pick three points up and win games.

“Graham Westley has gone in there and everyone knows how he likes his teams to play, he’ll have them fired up and it’s a game where we’re going to have to be really at it and start well from the first minute if we’re going to have any chance of getting something out of it."
