Legge pleased to mark 100th appearance with clean sheet

Port Vale captain Leon Legge is delighted that his 100th appearance for the club resulted in a clean sheet.

Legge played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 0-0 stalemate at Bradford City, earning the Valiants a solid point and a hard-earnt shutout in front of our own goal.

“We had a bit of a reshuffle for the team today, and we’ve got a well-earned point at a good Bradford side,” said the Vale skipper.

“It’s something we can build on.”

Legge joined the Valiants in May 2018 after a three-season spell at Cambridge United, and made a significant impact on the team in one of his first league starts, when he helped keep a clean sheet and scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at Crewe Alexandra.

He was handed the Vale captaincy in October 2019, and has been an almost ever present in manager John Askey’s starting lineups.

The skipper has played all but one of the league matches that he has been available for this season, and was reinstated to the team for the shutout at Bradford, and Legge believes it was vital that we took something out of the game.

“They [Bradford] sacked their manager not long ago, and the caretaker has come in and they’ve had a good run of results.”

“It was always going to be a tough one today and we managed to pick up a point.”

Throughout his time at Vale, Legge has had a number of centre-back partners, namely Nathan Smith, but it was Shaun Brisley who partnered the captain last night, with Smith being played at right-back, and Legge feels that he can be confident no matter who partners him in the middle of defence.

“We’ve played that system a few times over the past few seasons.”

“Nathan is adept to playing at right-back and you know what you’re getting from Bris, he’s very solid.”

Despite having just made his century of appearances for Vale, Legge is only looking ahead to our first game of 2021 when we travel to Mansfield Town, in the hope of earning three points.

“We just needed something positive today after the last few weeks and now we’ve got something to build on.”

“We travel to Mansfield in the hope of earning something positive again.”
