Neil Aspin has expressed his delight following his side’s 1-0 derby day win at Gresty road and has praised the level of maturity within this current squad.

Port Vale ran out 1-0 winners last Saturday over local rivals Crewe Alexandra thanks to Leon Legge’s first goal for the club.

The win provides the Valiants with their first away victory since December 2017, lifting them to 13th in the table, now three games unbeaten.

Following the result, the boss has indicated that there is a good level of maturity within the current squad, with a mix of youngsters and experience.

He said: “You need to have a mixture – you need to have experienced players as well as younger players who have got legs.

“But when you think Mitchell Clark, it’s a big game for him. Connell Rawlinson, he’s stepped up from non-league football. You’ve got Manny who’s had a spell but got on at non-league last year.

“Ricky Miller as well, he’s played a lot of non-league football – it is a big game for them and they’ve all coped with the occasion really well.”

Leon Legge scored his first goal for the club last Saturday and it proved vital as his header was the only thing to separate the two sides, and the boss has described Leon’s performance as ‘immense’.

Having been side-lined for the opening few games of the season, the commanding centre-half has taken his opportunity in the line-up from the scruff of the neck and has looked to nail down his place in Aspin’s starting eleven.

However, although Legge is bound to take the plaudits for the win, the boss believes it couldn’t have been down without a perfect team performance.

“He’s going to take the plaudits today and he deserves it because he’s not only scored the winning goal but overall he was immense.

“That set the tone for all the back-four who played well, as well as the goalkeeper.

“But the team overall I was really pleased with – they did everything that I would’ve asked, and it’d be wrong to single out anyone because you need to have a team performance to win games like today’s.”
