Neil Aspin still hoping to add more to his squad

22 May 2018

Manager Neil Aspin has made it clear that despite the recent additions to the squad, he will still be looking to bring more fresh faces in.

Over the past 10 past days, the club confirmed the signing of winger Brendon Daniels with Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper Scott Brown and Carlisle United midfielder Luke Joyce, both agreeing to join the club once their contracts expire.

Neil Aspin says he is happy with his latest recruits for his side but joked that he'll be even happier if the new signings do well. The gaffer described his latest signings, Daniels and Joyce, as being at different ends of the spectrum in terms of experience.

The manager made it clear his aim is to strengthen the spine of the team ahead of the new season, and already has players in his eye sight but understands the difficulty he faces getting the players he wants.

"We're going to sign a centre half so that's important and I will be bringing in another midfield player and then obviously we all know we need strikers, so it is all down the centre of the team.

"It's always the most difficult part for any team is to sign strikers. Everyone wants a striker and a goalscorer, but they're very hard to get and always in demand so that's probably going to take longer.

"I know we must get some strikers into the club otherwise we won't have a successful season. We must sign somebody who can score some goals. We can't go into the season just with Tom Pope and I'll be very disappointed if we're going into the season without any more goalscorers."

One player who is hoping to be on the score sheet on a regular occasion throughout the season is one of Neil's latest additions, Brendon Daniels.

Speaking to us last week, Daniels said he likes to score goals and create plenty of chances for his teammates, mentioning a lot of his goals do come from taking free kicks.

With Neil looking for a player who can score goals, this type of confidence from his new signing will be music to his ears, but the manager has made it clear Daniels has to take the opportunity he has been offered by the club.

"I've seen him in non-league football. This is somebody who has talent and we're giving him a chance and it's up to him to take it. It's up to Brendon to grab it.

"There's always a question mark over what people can and can't do. I'm concentrating on the things he can do, he has a really good delivery from wide areas. Dead balls, he takes really good corner kicks and free kicks.

"He's got a lot of good attributes. If he can produce that lower down he can still produce it higher up. With any player, he's now at an age where the penny has to drop. He has to dedicate himself totally to being a professional footballer because there isn't going to be another chance that comes along. I'm certainly prepared to give him the chance and it's up to him to take it."
