Port Vale played out a frantic 2-2 draw with Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon at Vale Park, and Neil Aspin's believes a draw was a fair result following the tie.

Vale got off to a flying start against The Robins, finding the net within 13 minutes of kick-off through Cristian Montano. The opener will definitely be a contender for goal of the month as the Colombian finished off a flowing Valiants move to give his side the lead.

However, Cheltenham hit back before half-time as Sam Jones tapped in from close range to level proceedings, sending both teams down to the tunnel with the scoreline level. 

Vale's afternoon almost ended in disastrous fashion as The Robins hit the lead with just a minute of regular time to play through Nigel Atangan, however, Antony Kay was on-hand once again to find the net and secure a point for the home side.

Following the game, the boss thought a point at peace was a fair result.

Aspin said: "We needed to play better than we did last week. We did play better than we did last week.

"We didn't play at our best. There's lots of things we could've done better - I thought, certainly defensively, we gave them too many chances and I thought we could've done better for both of the goals.

"It was an improvement on last week but that wouldn't be difficult because we were so poor. There was some pleasing aspects today but I try and be as honest as I can and at the end of the day, a draw was probably a fair result."

The gaffer has also praised the performance of forward Montano, following yet another impressive display in a Vale shirt.

The Colombian was on-hand to tap in a brilliant Port Vale team goal to give The Valiants the lead in the early stages of the Cheltenham tie - his fifth goal in four games, and he has proved just how big an asset he can be for Aspin's side.

A brace against Yeovil Town, followed by another two goals against Stoke City Under-21's have really put Cristian in the mood after picking up a number of unfortunate injuries. The boss is confident he can maintain his goalscoring form.

He said: "I've given Cristian a lot of praise. He's somebody that has got a lot of ability and we want him in the team.

"He is chipping in with goals and in a more forward role and they've been very important.

"We just need to keep him fit and if we can do that, I'm sure he'll chip in with more goals from now until the end of the season."
