Gaffer on Past Week

20 October 2017

Neil Aspin has expressed his delight for the week Port Vale have had but admits that there is a lot to improve on as the hard work continues.

Following two consecutive victories over Cheltenham Town and Morecambe, the new gaffer has enjoyed a good start to life as the new Vale gaffer. Six goals have been scored in the two games where striker, Tom Pope, has bagged four of them.

Speaking to the press about his side’s recent victories, Aspin has congratulated his squad but says they must continue to get their head down.

“It’s been a good week.”, said Aspin.

“We’re obviously very pleased with the two results but there’s a lot of hard work to do. Nobody’s getting carried away, especially me!

“We have a tough season ahead with a lot of tough games but we’ve made a good start this week.”

The players are enjoying their football at the moment and as Aspin says, the confidence is high within the group.

He said: “It doesn’t matter what club you’re at, if you’re not winning games then confidence will dip and you need a result to turn it around.

“We have all been in football long enough to know that confidence comes and goes. It can turn with someone doing something good in a game – getting a bit of luck, getting a goal, so there’s lots of ways it can turn.

“We have to continue to work hard, try to do the right things and if we get 11 players on the pitch to work hard then we can get results which will help us climb the table.”

The Valiants have also been in good form in the reserve league, and with such a big squad – the gaffer is happy to see that all of his players are doing well as he continues to learn more about them.

“I’m really happy with the response I’ve had from all the players”, said Aspin.

“There’s a lot of genuine lads who want to do well and you can’t ask for any more. We have players who are not playing, experienced players who are not playing who have then gone to the reserves and have done what I expected.

“We need to keep those players fit as we try to add more friendly games so we can get all the players match fit. It’s alright training and running but you need to be match fit so we will try and increase the number of games they are playing at the moment."
