"I'm Happy To Play Anywhere"

31 August 2017

Following two consecutive starts versus Crewe Alexandra and Oldham Athletic, Joe Davis is looking for a continued run in the starting eleven.

Whilst acknowledging that his strongest position is in the centre of defence, he is willing to play anywhere as long as he is out on the pitch and helping Vale as they look to pick up results.

After playing at right-back against Crewe, Davis returned to his preferred central berth as the Valiants drew 0-0 in their opening Checkatrade Trophy game.

Following the penalty shootout win, he said: "I am willing to a job anywhere in the team and I just need to keep playing, trying to do my best in whatever position that may be.

"Being versatile is very important and I think it helps the manager if there's an injury or suspension and he has to make a decision.

"I'm happy to play anywhere he needs me, but I probably feel more comfortable at centre-half and I think he knows that."

As a defender, shutting out the opposition is a great feeling and Davis was delighted to deny Oldham on Tuesday night.

He played the full 90 minutes alongside Nathan Smith and both put in impressive displays. Despite not being able to find a goal to win the game, Davis insists that it was a positive result to take back to Burslem.

He said: "We had been talking in the dressing room before the game saying that we needed to concentrate on getting clean sheet and that's something we have managed to do.

"For me personally it's important as a centre-half to come in and do a good job - hopefully I've done that.

"It's just about getting into the manager's head now and giving him a headache for the next game."

Speaking about the Checkatrade Trophy following the full-time whistle, Davis emphasised how important it is for Vale to respect the competition.

He said: "We have to respect it and it gives us an opportunity to get away from the league which has been very frustrating for us so far, everyone knows that.

"It's massive in providing the club with funding and it gives us a chance of playing at Wembley. I've never played there, but I'd love to, as would all of the lads so it's a great chance for us.

"Hopefully we can keep picking up points in the group stage first and foremost, but we've gained a bit of confidence now and fingers crossed we can kick on now."
