After scoring the goal that gave Vale the win against Barnsley on Saturday, Mark Marshall spoke about his brilliant effort to the press after the match.
He believes that the fact he had many chances in the first half, but didn’t score, could have got him down, but instead he persevered and it all worked out in the end.
Talking about his goal, he said: “I think that was one of the best goals I’ve ever scored in terms of the jinking involved.
“I scored a few good ones when I was younger, but they weren’t on this stage so don’t really count.
“I’m just happy we got the victory though because we deserved it. Everyone goes through a bad spell and our bad spell has resulted in someone we respect greatly leaving, but we’ve just got to get on with it and try our best.
“When I went in at half time I said to Mark Grew that I had to get one and he told me just to keep going at the defence and it will come.
“We’ve been practicing cutting in from both wings and it paid dividends today. Sometimes you’ve just got to believe in your ability, but one of the biggest things as an individual, not just as a footballer, is perseverance.
“You can’t always take the easy path, even though sometimes when you do things that aren’t working people will shout at you.
“You’ve got to have that confidence to keep going and I just thought - you know what? I need to keep going and one of my chances will go in - and it worked.”
