Port Vale Football Club is delighted to confirm that defender Nathan Smith has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract to run to the summer of 2025, subject to EFL and FA approval.
Smith, 27, is likely to bring up his 350th appearance for the club this weekend at Charlton Athletic, a feat only 16 other Valiants have achieved.
A near ever-present since making his Vale debut in August 2016, Smith helped the Valiants to take a huge step towards securing League One safety on Saturday as Andy Crosby’s side defeated Bristol Rovers 2-0 at Vale Park.
Commenting on securing Smith’s long-term future, Port Vale’s director of football David Flitcroft said:
“Nathan has had another outstanding season; we see him as one of the cultural carriers within the dressing room and squad, with the example he sets on a daily basis.
“He has adapted and developed into a League One player and continues to represent the supporters, the board, his teammates and the staff in the way he plays, with his bravery and warrior-like attitude to the game.
“We have been in negotiations with Nathan and his representatives for over six weeks and have discussed the club’s plans to support our League One growth. It is pleasing that Nathan wants to be a part of that journey and important to him that he can continue to develop as a League One player.
“I would like to thank Nathan’s representatives for their open dialogue and transparency throughout the process, and we were delighted to complete the formalities following Saturday’s win against Bristol Rovers.
“I think it is important to recognise that Nathan remains a role model for the many young players and staff within our Academy. Highlighting a pathway is important, though it is also vital that our young people understand the value in staying humble, working harder every day and seeing the pride he feels in representing his local club as one of our own.”
