Match Preview: Grimsby Town

24 August 2019

Port Vale head to Grimsby Town today on the back of a fantastic win against Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday evening. It was the Vale's first win of the season and we remain unbeaten heading into the game today. You can find all the key information ahead of it below.

Fixture: Grimsby Town vs Port Vale

Competition: Sky Bet League Two

Date: Saturday 24th August 2019

Port Vale

Manager: John Askey

Form: DDDW

Top Goal Scorer(s): David Amoo, Richie Bennett (2 goals)

After last Saturdays last minute heartbreak against Salford City to deny Vale picking up their first win of the season, the Valiants headed into Tuesdays game against Forest Green Rovers determined to get all three points and that they did.

Manager John Askey was delighted with the first half performance as Richie Bennett made it two goals in two games whilst David Amoo continued his fine form at Vale Park, scoring his second goal in consecutive home games. The win extended Vale's unbeaten run in the league this season to four games, and Askey will be hoping they can continue that run this afternoon against Grimsby.

The Vale will have to do it without Cristian Montano, who is set to miss out due to concussion. The winger suffered a big blow to the head on Tuesday and looks likely to sit this afternoon out. Manny Oyeleke and Rhys Browne remain sidelined with hamstring injuries.

We go there [Grimsby] full of confidence, we’ve not lost yet in the league so there’s no reason we can’t go there and perform.

Grimsby Town

Manager: Michael Jolley

Form: WDLD

Top Goal Scorer: James Hansen (2 goals)

Grimsby Town have endured a mixed start to the season having not won since the opening day of the season when they travelled to Morecambe and beat the home side 2-0.

Last time out, The Mariners came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Colchester United, thanks to second-half goals from James Hanson and Matt Green.

Grimsby are looking to get their first home league win of 2019/20 season when they host us today. On-loan Newcastle United defender Liam Gibson will face a late fitness test ahead of the game, after missing Tuesday’s draw with Colchester United through illness. Ahkeem Rose and Ludvig Öhman will miss the game, but should both be back available for selection next week.

Talk:

Dave Kevan: "We'll approach it no different to any other games that we've had this season. We know Grimsby is a tough venue, they've had a reasonable start themselves. They're a strong, physical team and we'll have to make sure we're at it again."

Michael Jolley: “I’m not surprised they’re unbeaten – they had a really good winning against Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday. And I think they’ve got more energy in their team this year than perhaps they had previously, and I think they’re a good team.”
