Neil Aspin expresses the importance of a win this weekend at Vale Park

2 August 2018

Aspin is looking to hit the ground running this weekend, as Vale open their 2018/19 season at home to Cambridge United and expresses just how important a win over the U's could be for his side this season.

Port Vale welcome Cambridge United to Vale Park this Saturday as the new season finally gets underway and the Vale boss underlines how important a win would be for his team.

"A win gives everybody belief, it gets you up and running in terms of points on the board which is extremely important.

"Like we found last year, the longer you go without winning at home, it's possible to go on a run and the pressure starts to build.

"You're not going to win or lose what you do in a season based on the first game, but it'll be nice to start with a win."

The gaffer also believes it is vital to restore pride after last season's final game of the campaign.

Vale were beaten 5-0 at the Abbey stadium last season and the players will need little to no motivation for this Saturday's game in order put things right.

The boss said: "Last year Cambridge took full advantage of us not being very good.

"They passed the ball well, they had good movement, and reading reports it looks as though they'll be playing in the same vein.

"They'll be coming here expecting to win but this is the sort of game we should look forward as we want to restore some pride."
