PREVIEW: Port Vale vs Grimsby Town

6 October 2017

Port Vale vs Grimsby Town

Competition - Sky Bet League Two

Date - Saturday 7th October 2017

Venue - Vale Park

Preview

Neil Aspin will take his place in the dugout for the first time on Saturday following his appointment as Vale manager earlier in the week.

Russell Slade’s Grimsby Town will provide the opposition as they travel to Burslem. Four games without a win in all competitions, the Mariners will be hoping to half that run.

However, The Valiants will be looking to build on the Checkatrade Trophy win over Newcastle United by gaining an important set of three points in Sky Bet League Two.

The Opposition

Grimsby Town have got off to a mixed start this season and as a result, they lie 15th in Sky Bet League Two with 14 points to their name.

Having won promotion from the Vanarama Conference last season, the Mariners are hoping to sustain their status as a Football League side.

Over the course of their last four outings, they are without a win. Most recently, a defeat to Scunthorpe United condemned them to an early exit in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Talk:

Neil Aspin: “It’s great to have a home game to start with, but it’s all about the result. If we don’t get the right one it would be disappointing, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Russell Slade:  Port Vale has always been a difficult place to go. They've got off to a difficult start this season and I’m sure that between them they can turn it round but let’s hope it is after Saturday.

“When you look at what they’ve got on paper, they are quite threatening. My personal opinion is that they are in a false position and I think at some stage they will get out.”

Team News

Port Vale remain without Rob Lainton, Cristian Montano, Kjel Knops and Anton Forrester due to longer term injury problems.

Luke Summerfield and Nathan Clarke are injury doubts for Grimsby according to the Mariners’ manager, Russell Slade.
