Smith: "We have a good squad and I think we have what it takes."

Nathan Smith has a strong belief that there is enough quality in Port Vale’s squad to start to climb the table as soon as possible.

The Valiants are without a win in four games as they return to League Two action this weekend as Cambridge United visit Vale Park.

Speaking about the season so far, Smith is frustrated by how results have gone against his side but believes that they can turn the season around.

He said: “The last few weeks have been a bit disappointing to not pick up the results that we wanted.

“We want to start enjoying winning games again. We have enough quality to get to where we want to be in the league and get through the FA Cup.

“If you look beyond the starting 11, we have a good squad and I think we have what it takes.”

It’s been a settled defence for most of the season where the same names turn up on the teamsheet most weeks. Nathan believes that it inspires confidence within a small group and allows you to know eachother better as players.

“I’ve played with the same people over and over again,” said the 21-year old.

“You get to know what eachother is good at. I think we have settled well but we’ve gone astray from what we were doing right.

“We have to go back to the basics, and that’s where we will start on Saturday.

With The U’s travelling to Vale Park on Saturday, Smith hopes that Vale can put their bad run of form behind them and get back to winning ways.

He said: “The last few games have been disappointing to lose and not come away with what we should have deserved.

“We want to get a win, if it comes as a 3-0, a 3-1, 3-2 or even a 1-0 – no one really cares.

“As long as we put the bad run behind us and move forward.”
