Vale host their third home game in a week as Cambridge United make the trip to Burslem. Here are all the details heading in to the League Two clash.
Competition: Sky Bet League Two
Fixture: Port Vale vs Cambridge United
Date: Saturday 9th December 2017-12-08
Venue: Vale Park
Port Vale will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Cambridge United as they were knocked out of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night. Against Yeovil and Shrewsbury Town, the Valiants were ahead but were unable to hold on as the opposition got goals back.
Neil Aspin’s men are now without a win in four matches and will be hoping that a win against Shaun Derry’s men can be enough to reignite their form.
The visitor’s make the journey North in what will be Vale’s last home game until Boxing Day. The U’s sit 13th in League Two and will also be looking to bounce back from last week’s 2-0 defeat at Newport County.
Last season, Cambridge finished a respectable 11th in League Two last season and find themselves in a similar situation this campaign. They sit 13th in the divison and are just three points away from the play-off positions.
They are the joint second lowest goalscorers in the league along with Crawley Town and just behind Morecambe. Their defence looked to be going well until the 7-0 loss against Luton Town a couple of weeks ago as they look to kick on from here.
Neil Aspin: “It’s up to us to cause them problems. On their day, they are capable to beat anyone in this league.”
Shaun Derry: “We’ll pick ourselves up and look forward to welcoming Newport back to our home ground in a couple of weeks’ time and we’ll have to make sure we approach Port Vale next week and take our frustrations out.”
Neil Aspin could name Ben Whitfield and Rob Lainton in his starting line-up for Saturday as they return from injury. Whitfield enjoyed a run-out of 30 minutes on Tuesday night with Lainton returning to the bench.
There are no fresh injury concerns for the Valiants.
Cambridge have no fresh injury concerns from the 2-0 defeat to Newport last Sunday.
