Aspin: "You always feel better after a win."

10 December 2017

Port Vale ended a frustrating week of football on a positive note with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United yesterday.

Manager, Neil Aspin was pleased with his team’s performance and more so the fact that they managed to grab that crucial second goal, that recently, has been eluding them: “We were under some pressure today to get a result, but the players coped well and gave a lot in terms of effort and commitment. We got the second goalnd that was the vital thing.

“Too many times this season we have been leading at half-time, failed to get that second goal and ended up dropping points – so today, I couldn’t stress how important that second goal was.”

On the scoresheet for the second game in a row was Cristian Montano. His brace saw him bag the Man of the Match award as well, and Aspin is more than aware of the importance of his performance: “Well I am pleased for Cristian because he has had a difficult start since he has been here.

“I think that everybody knows that we have not scored enough goals and not had enough goal scorers. He’s been vital for us today.”

The gaffer continued on a jovial note: “I’ll sleep a lot better tonight than I have done. It comes with the job, if you are not winning games then being a football manager is not a pleasant job. It does affect your sleep and your life in general.”

However, his focus didn’t stray too far from the next challenge only three days away: “You always feel better after a win, but you have to enjoy it tonight then move on to the next.”

Addressing the upcoming trip to Somerset on Tuesday, the 52-year old said: “I feel a lot better going into the game now than I did before the game, because the last thing you want is a long journey on the back of dropped points.

“It will be a long trip down there, but it is a tough game as they all are, but the FA Cup is important – we treat is just like a league game. Hopefully we can get a result.”
