Vale progressed into the second round of the Capital One Cup with a well-earned win over Burnley following an impressive performance at Vale Park.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche fielded a strong side and made Vale work hard for their victory, but unlike Vale’s opening League One fixture against Crewe Alex Vale were rewarded for a hard working display.

Rob Page decided on two changes to his starting eleven to face Championship Burnley in Vale’s opening home fixture of the season.

Sam Kelly and Uche Ikpeazu made way for Ajay Leitch-Smith and Enoch Andoh to make their full debuts for the club as the manager freshened things up a little.

Vale matched the visitors in the early stages of the game, in what was turning out to be a keenly contested affair, with players from both sides showing some urgency.

Vale were not too far off opening the scores when Sam Foley forced his way through before finding Enoch Andoh on the left side of the 18 yard box.

The winger elected to hit it first time and his shot wasn’t too far off the target, going just over the crossbar with Clarets’ ‘keeper Matt Gilks wrong footed.

Vale were playing some neat passing football, keeping possession well, but seldom causing the visitors problems in the final third of the pitch.

Neither ‘keeper had a lot to do, but when Jak Alnwick was called upon in the 30 the minute, he stretched to push away a left wing cross to his left,

Burnley’s George Boyd was well-placed to get on the end of the loose ball, but Vale skipper Carl Dickinson closed down quickly to make the block.

There was a half chance for the Vale five minutes before the half time interval when Byron Moore crossed the ball into the box from the right, but Louis Dodds’ glancing header sailed harmlessly past the far post.

Burnley’s Matt Taylor and Tendayi Darikwa were both booked for challenges on the tricky Enoch Andoh in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half.

In-between those two yellow cards the visitors carved out a goal scoring opportunity when Boyd forced his way inside on the right to put the ball inside the Vale box.

Michael Kightly was quick to react with a first time shot, but Ryan Inniss threw himself into the challenge, blocking the former Stoke winger’s effort just inside the 18 yard box.

Burnley were having more of the ball in the second half and they went close again when Kightly fired in a shot through a crowd of players.

Alnwick, in the Vale goal, obviously saw it late and it appeared to strike the Vale ‘keeper, rather than the stopper making the save.

Ten minutes later Vale made their third and final change – Andoh being replaced by Sam Kelly.

Burnley threw bodies forward in numbers in desperate search of an equalising goal, but it failed to materialise and Vale hung on for a well-deserved victory.
