Capital One Cup Round One Round-Up

12 August 2015

Other than Port Vale’s well-deserved win over Burnley, there were plenty more interesting results in the Capital One Cup first round last night.

Sky Bet League Two side Accrington Stanley almost produced the shock of the evening against Championship outfit Hull City.

It was goalless after 90 minutes in Lancashire meaning the tie went into extra time. The Tigers opened the scoring through Chuba Akpom before Matt Crooks equalised.

Former Vale striker Greg Luer then put Hull back in front but Terry Gornell’s reply sent the game to penalties.

Goal-scorer Crooks missed the decisive spot kick for Accrington, sending Hull through to the second round.

Elsewhere, Oxford United beat Brentford by an astonishing four goals. Liam Sercombe, Danny Hylton, Kemar Roofe and John Mullins each scored to seal the shock.

Nottingham Forest and Walsall played out the highest scoring match of the round at the City Ground.

Tom Bradshaw bagged a hat-trick for the away side, including a 95th minute winner from the penalty spot as the third tier outfit defeated Dougie Freedman’s side 4-3.
