Notts County were beaten by Preston North End last night to remain on 47 points, two from safety and four behind Port Vale.
Two goals from Jermaine Beckford and one from Joe Garner was enough to secure a 3-1 victory for North End and leave County with an uphill task to stay in the division.
Fellow strugglers Leyton Orient also suffered a 1-0 defeat to away to Rochdale, which leaves them also in the dropzone on 47 points. Ian Henderson with the only goal.
These results mean that the Valiants can secure safety for next season with a win at Yeovil Town on Saturday. The game at Huish Park kicks off at 15:00.
Elsewhere in the Sky Bet League One last night, MK Dons enjoyed a 3-0 win over Doncaster, Swindon drew 3-3 with Walsall and it was all-square at Glanford Park as Scunthorpe drew 1-1 with Bradford City.
