Gaffer upbeat after new loan signing

Micky keen to prove the doubters wrong this season

Micky Adams is pleased with his latest acquisition, loan signing Freddie Veseli, who joined the club from Ipswich Town this morning and says he is expecting Vale to surprise a few people this season.

The Vale boss said: “He’s a right back but he is quite versatile and he can play centre half as well and also in midfield. He is a versatile player, but we see him really challenging for that right back spot.

“He is quick, can handle the ball and has got a decent pedigree, although if you look at the number of games he has played, it probably doesn’t reflect that.

“He has been at Manchester City, Manchester United and Ipswich and there is a lot of potential there.

“We may have missed out on a couple of targets, but with Ryan McGivern, Freddie Veseli and the players we have retained who were here last season, we have competition for places and I am fairly happy with that side of things now.”

Will Vale sign anybody else on loan before the start of the season? Adams certainly hopes so after chasing a striker for a few weeks without quite tying down a deal.

Adams added: ”We have said that possibly the last pieces of the jigsaw would be a couple of loan players.

“We have got one in on a decent length loan and we are looking at a front man to do the same as well.

“It changes from day to day and from week to week really. We have chased the same boy for a number of weeks now and thought we had landed him last week.

“It didn’t happen so we have to be patient. They are not our players, they are not free agents who can just walk into your football club.

“You have to agree terms with the clubs and if we can do that we will get another one through the door.”

The manager is confident his side can make people sit up and look this coming season after being written off once again by the bookmakers.

He said: “While we were away we popped into a bookies and it was a bit of a shock seeing we are third favourites for the drop.

“I think I have got a decent squad here and when Byron (Moore)returns, that is another body to add to the squad that we have not seen in the pre-season.

“We are fairly content in terms of the business we have done. Could we have done any better? Possibly, we could have paid extortionate wages for other players but that is not the way we run our ship here.

“We have missed out on a few targets, but the players we have brought in will make us competitive again and I think we might just surprise a few people.”
