Team spirit is high

11 December 2013

Adam Yates says it's the best he has known

With seven wins in their last nine games, it is obvious there is something special in the Vale dressing room – a togetherness that is necessary if any team is to succeed.

Defender Adam yates has experienced a similar spirit elsewhere, but says what the Vale have right now is better than anything he has seen before.

He said: “The teams that do well post-Christmas are the ones who have started their runs just before or come into their own over the Christmas period and you want to be taking that into the New Year and finishing on a high.

“When we come to the New Year we will have played all the teams at least once either home or away and we will have had a look at the rest of the teams in the league.

“I think we can be happy with the way was have responded after promotion and the way we have responded to the league.

“That isn’t a surprise from a player’s or manager’s point of view because we know what we have got in that dressing room and it was up to us to go out and prove some doubters wrong and I think we have done that over the last couple of years now.

“When I was at Morecambe we had a changing room with a fantastic team atmosphere and spirit and I remember us going on a twenty-odd game unbeaten run there.

“We didn’t win too many games but we didn’t lose any. We were a tough side to break down and the team spirit was a big factor in that.

“I think we have got more than that in this dressing room at Port Vale. We have lost big characters such as Marc Richards, Lee Collins, Sean Rigg, Lewis Haldane, some who have been here for a long time.

“But the lads who have come in have bought into it and are part of the squad. We had our Christmas party this week and I think the lads know that everyone in that dressing room is fighting for each other’s causes.”
