Port Vale launches fans’ phone to help tackle abuse

As part of an ongoing commitment to make Vale Park a welcoming and safe environment for all, Port Vale has introduced a fans’ phone to which incidents of abuse or unacceptable behaviour can be reported anonymously.

This initiative follows a number of incidents of abuse arising on social media and behaviour which breached ground regulations – including a handful of objects being thrown on to the pitch.

When inside Vale Park, supporters who hear abusive, racist or homophobic languages or witness unacceptable behaviour are asked to send a text to 07801 216675 stating the stand where the incident takes place, a time, seat row and number, if possible, and any other pertinent details.

Port Vale Safety Officer John Rutherford explained: “The fans’ phone is a new initiative which empowers supporters to assist the club in dealing with incidents of unacceptable behaviour.

“When we have experienced this it has been heartening to see was how the vast majority of fans immediately condemned poor behaviour.

“This is because they understand that when they attend football matches at Vale Park they effectively enter into a ‘contract’ with their club. Supporters must adhere to ground regulations to assist the club in its endeavours to create the most welcoming and safe environment possible.”

Mr Rutherford added: “We want all ages who attend matches at Vale Park to feel welcome and safe and to enjoy their time. We certainly don’t want our 1,300+ Junior Valiants – or anyone else for that matter – exposed to abusive language or unacceptable behaviour and we are grateful for any support in helping to deal with it.”

Port Vale Chief Executive Colin Garlick said: “It is important that supporters understand that breaches of ground regulations such as encroaching on to the playing area (pitchside or grass) or throwing missiles or igniting flares can result in serious repercussions for the club with potential charges and sanctions from the Football Association.”

Supporters are reminded of the following regulations which are in effect at Vale Park: https://www.port-vale.co.uk/Policies/ground-regulations/

To further assist supporters if they have been the victim of abuse or have witnessed an incident of discrimination or harassment, fans are reminded that Port Vale FC has a designated reporting email address: report@port-vale.co.uk

Supporters can also report incidents of abuse or harassment to Kick It Out by calling the freephone number 0800 169 9414 or contact via Twitter @kickitout.

Alternatively, supporters can download and use the Kick It Out app via Apple Store or Google Play.

All complaints received by Kick It Out will be recorded and details of the incident forwarded to Port Vale FC and the Football Association, with the complainants’ anonymity guaranteed if requested.

Port Vale FC would like to assure supporters that all complaints are dealt with sensitively and appropriately to help fans feel comfortable with the process and see that the club is taking any issues seriously.
