Askey: There have been too many 'awful days'.

28 April 2019

John Askey was far from happy with his side's performance on Saturday afternoon as Macclesfield ran out 1-0 winners at Vale Park and the gaffer claims there have been too many days like that over the course of the season.

With his former side heading to Vale Park in desperate need of a win, Askey certainly wasn't going to make it easy for them as he named a strong side to face Macclesfield.

Tom Pope returned to the starting lineup, however, it wasn't to go to plan for the Valiants as a spirited Macclesfield side dug deep to grind out a result.

David Fitzpatrick's strike on 66 minutes proved the only goal of the game and the boss was far from pleased with the performance, claiming he was desperate for a win.

He said: "Miserable. They were good conditions to play in apart from the wind getting up. But it was an awful, awful day for us.

"There's been too many of those over the season and hopefully this is the end of it and next season will be the start of good times.

"You've got to have a bit of devil when you're playing football, especially at home and you've got to go and show the supporters that it means something to you and too many didn't."

Despite the result, Askey has praised the performance of the ever-outstanding, Scott Brown.

Browny was on top form once again on Saturday afternoon and put in a number of huge saves to spare Vale's blushes.

Testament to his form over the season, Brown cleaned up at the Awards Evening on Saturday night, winning Official Away Travel Player of the Year, Player's Player of the Year and Player of the Year.

The boss admitted after the game that the Vale stopper has been crucial in Vale's bid for survival over the course of the season.

He said: "There are a lot of players out there that could learn from him (Brown).

"He comes in every day, trains really hard and does everything right. He deserves to get the accolades that he does.

"Without him, then I think we all know where the club would be."
