John Askey insists taking Vale job feels like 'coming home'

Having been appointed just a few days back, John Askey has expressed how well he has settled at the club, merely days after signing at Vale Park.

Son of a club legend, it was never going to be a difficult transition as Askey took up his new role as Vale boss, though it seems the move has been smoother than first expected.

Having taken charge of his first training session with the squad, the gaffer was more than impressed with the squad available to him and he admits that just a day into the job, he feels at home at Vale Park.

He said: "It's been said before - it's a dream job for me to come here and hopefully I can help the team progress.

"With my dad playing - he had a succesful time here. There's quite a few pictures around that I've seen before or they're hung up on my wall, so it's nice to have that feeling of coming home.

"Being at Macclesfield, it was like a home-from-home really, then going to Shrewsbury, it was completely different. So coming here, it's nice to get that feeling back and I'm doing it for the right reasons; I want the club to do well."

Port Vale make the trip south on Saturday afternoon as they face Cambridge United in Sky Bet League Two action, in what will be Askey's first game in charge of The Valiants.

The boss is looking forward to the challenge, though he has urged the fans to get behind the team as the boys  prepare for what will be a huge few weeks in League Two.

In a message to the fans, Askey said: "Just get behind the players; it's an important time. When you've not been winning, there can be a lot of negative comments flying around.

"If the supporters can realise what position the football club are in, the most important thing is to get behind the players, regardless of what's going on at the football club.

"Just give them all your support. As long as they are working as hard as they can, that's all you expect as a supporter, I'm sure. Hopefully the results will come, especially at home."
