Scott Burgess relishing game time for the Vale

Scott Burgess is pleased with the amount of time he has been able to get on the pitch so far this season and hopes to maintain his spot in the side as the season progresses.

Burgess had to wait for his opportunity in team but made sure not to waste it, scoring on his debut in a 3-2 win away at Macclesfield Town in the Leasing.com trophy and he hopes he can continue to reward Askey for the faith shown in him.

Remaining patient and working hard in training was key to breaking into the side according the Burgess and his form on the pitch, which has seen him twice get on the scoresheet, has left the midfielder happy with his performances.

With Tom Conlon returning to training and Manny Oyeleke still yet to return Burgess emphasised how vital it is for himself to keep developing and learning off those around him to ensure he remains in the team.

It’s not just the gaffer who Burgess has aimed to impress, with him hopeful that his performances have pleased the fans this season whose support was praised by Burgess.

He said: “Obviously you want to come here and play games but to finally get my chance and hopefully I’ve repaid the gaffer for the performances I’ve given and the team doing well is the main aim.

“I think I’ve been doing quite well, obviously chipped in with a couple of goals which is always a bonus, but with the team doing well that’s the main thing so I’m just delighted to be involved really.

“I think I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing, keep working hard in training, keep learning every day off different off different players, off the gaffer and keep being consistent with performances.

“Hopefully they’ve [the fans] enjoyed my performances so far, it’s all about performing well for the team, if I and the team are doing well then hopefully it’s good for them.”

Burgess has featured alongside Luke Joyce in the midfield, and the young midfielder emphasised how big of an influence his more experienced teammate his been to his development as player.

Another young player who has featured with Burgess and Joyce has been Jake Taylor who has been in good form since joining on loan from Nottingham Forest, scoring four times so far this campaign.

Making sure they have both taken their opportunities in the side was essential for Burgess who highlighted just how strong he feels the Vale midfield options are for this season.

He said: “Joycey’s been one of the most consistent players in the team this season and to play around him he’s always giving us advice, especially me and Jake [Taylor] playing in front of him.

“He’s [Joyce] reached the 500 career games mark recently, which is a massive achievement, so it shows that he’s had a great career and he’s been very consistent so to play alongside a player like that is always a bonus.

“The midfield’s quite a strong area where we’ve got a lot of good players, it’s unfortunate with the injuries we’ve got at the minute but that’s given me and Jake [Taylor] a chance and it’s been down to us to take our chance and do well for the team.”
