Fixture: Port Vale vs Tranmere Rovers

Competition: Sky Bet League Two

Date: Saturday 14th November

Kick-Off: 3:00 pm

Venue: Vale Park

Port Vale

Manager: John Askey

Form: WWWLW

Top Goal Scorer: Mark Cullen & Tom Pope (2 goals)

The Valiants will be looking to pick up from where they left off on Tuesday night, following our 4-2 victory over Liverpool under-21’s in our final Papa John’s Trophy group stage match, securing our place at the top of the group and our participation in the knockout stages of the competition.

We will also be aiming to carry on our impressive league form, with our last Sky Bet League Two match resulting in a 2-0 win at Southend United, with a brace and EFL Team of the Week performance from Tom Pope securing the three points and third consecutive league victory.

We have already played Tranmere at Vale Park this campaign, when Dino Visser’s penalty shootout heroics, secured two points for us in our Papa John’s Trophy group-stage opener, following a 0-0 stalemate in normal time.

John Askey has received a boost with Harry McKirdy and Cristian Montano playing a full 90 minutes on Tuesday night, whilst Manny Oyeleke also got 45 minutes under his belt. However, right-back Zak Mills will miss the game, after receiving a positive Covid-19 test earlier this week, whilst James Gibbons is still out of action for the foreseeable future.

“The important thing is as the season’s gone on, we’ve continued to improve and hopefully we can keep that going.”

John Askey, Port Vale Manager

Tranmere Rovers

Manager: Ian Dawes (Interim Manager)

Form: LLWWD

Top Goal Scorer: James Vaughan (4 goals)

It has been a whirlwind few weeks at Tranmere, with former manager Mike Jackson being relieved of his duties on 31st October, following a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Morecambe, which left the Rovers sitting in 18th place in the league.

However, since Ian Dawes has taken the reigns as interim manager, Tranmere have seen an upturn in form, winning two games and earning a Papa John’s Trophy penalty shootout victory over Wigan Athletic which secured their place in the next stage of the competition, finishing second in the group behind ourselves.

One to watch: James Vaughan

Tranmere’s top goalscorer has a wealth of EFL experience throughout his 16-year playing career.

After becoming the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer at Everton, aged 16 years and 270 days old, he played for multiple clubs throughout the EFL including Norwich City, Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and Bradford City.

Following a successful loan at Tranmere last season, the club made his deal permanent in the summer, with the 32-year old striker already providing the goods for the Rovers this season, contributing four goals.

Talk:

John Askey: “Tranmere have improved since Ian Dawes has come in, they’ve got a different way of playing now and it will be a tough test, because I think as the season goes on, they’ll be in and around the top end of the table.”

Ian Dawes: “We’ve got to be aware of what Vale are good, but we’re going there to try and win the game.”
